How did you get into module development for MIVA Merchant?
I have an electrical engineering degree and lots of programming background, and have always been good with computers. We started using Merchant and creating custom MIVA Merchant solutions for clients in 1997, with Merchant Version 1.24, so I am very familiar with Miva Scripting language, and created a number of custom applications using it. Since previous versions of Merchant had so many third party modules available, we used third party modules, or created custom ones, as needed. When MIVA came out with Merchant v5, we had number of clients that liked what the new Merchant version offered, with new Store Morph Technology(SMT) Templates, Version History and various Database formats, but were reluctant to switch since there were no modules available. Since we were a part of the Merchant v5 Beta Group, I saw the power and capabilities of the new system, with great flexibility for designers and developers. Most of our modules are for Merchant v5 and are all customer driven.
What is your favorite module you've developed for MIVA Merchant?
I don't know that I have a favorite. All of our modules provide useful features, control, flexibility and are very easy to use and install. I guess our Merchant HTML WYSIWYG Editor has probably made the biggest impact. The module is a great time saving tool, used by many of our customers. It eliminates a lot of common mistakes, and provides a way to add rich content without using an external editor, FTP uploading images, and a lot of copying and pasting.
When coming up with a new module concept, where do you draw inspiration? How do you recognize a need?
We have years of experience working with various merchants and custom solutions. Since we have used other third party modules for years, we know what makes a good module. All of our modules are customer requested and are packed with features. We also make every effort to make all of our modules easy to install, configure and implement.
Any exciting new projects you're developing? What can we expect to see from Advanced Development Solutions in the near future?
We just completed the work on migrating our own site, www.stlads.com, to Merchant v5 and have completed a number of challenging client projects: PFYC.com - Parts for Your Car offers a variety of Performance products, Shoppersrule.com - Allows customers to name their own price and creativewallcovering.com - Wall Art Framing. Our numerous customer projects have delayed a release of some of our new modules, but we just released our Extra Template Manager Pro and Ultimate Category Tree Plus modules, and will be releasing our Order Status History Manager and Product FAQ in the near future.

Customer Service - Listen to the customer needs and let the customer needs drive the direction of your business.
Finally, if you weren't a MIVA Developer, what do you think you would be doing now?
To be honest, I love what I do. Every day is a new challenge, so it is difficult to see myself doing anything else. If I was not a MIVA Developer, I would probably still be working with computers and internet, working with customers and providing custom solutions.
